3 Super Simple Ways to Break Into Charity Gaming

September 19, 2019 Brian Isaac

An entirely new peer-to-peer fundraising community is on your horizon.

The biggest innovation in peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising is here: enabling video gamers to stream their gameplay online in return for donations to your charity.

With thousands of causes helped and over $75 million raised globally on live-streaming platform Twitch, gaming is an incredible opportunity for ANZ nonprofits.

Our research at Blackbaud shows that fundraisers who receive ongoing support reach their fundraising goal quicker. If you support gamers in their passion, they’re likely to become advocates for life.

Thanks to JustGiving Livestream Fundraising, charities are attracting an entirely new supporter base and raising money in amazing ways!

For instance, just last month, BeyondBlue and Unreal Aussies teamed up in Gold Coast to raise over $7,000 in a single day to help the 3 million+ Australians struggling with anxiety and depression every year.

So what are some opportunities coming up in the world of charity gaming? Today, we’ll highlight three developments that will change the P2P fundraising game. Let’s jump in!

Coming soon: the ANZ Gaming Hub

Gaming is bigger than ever, and coming soon is our very own Charity Gaming Hub for the AU/NZ region! Here’s where you’ll be able to make your charity known to gamers looking for a cause to support, as well as find resources to make the most out of the Gaming for Good movement.

Stay tuned for more information on the launch of our Gaming Hub!

Three ways to hold a #GamingForGood event

The best part about #GamingForGood campaigns is how modern, interactive, and flexible they are. Here are a few exciting ways to get involved without breaking the bank.

Empower gamers to host their own event for you.

The simplest way to get into the gaming space is to let your supporters know that they can host a gaming event to raise funds for your cause. Simply mention it as an option on your giving hub and make sure you're listed on our upcoming Gaming Hub.

Bonus strategy for some extra cool points: Look ahead to the upcoming video game release schedule to encourage your supporters to plan a stream around their launch.

Enable gamers to raise money alongside traditional fundraising events.

Gamers can be involved in your next fundraising event by raising money streaming their gameplay on the date of the event. This is an easy and low-cost way to others involved who either can’t compete or aren’t interested.

Host your own dedicated gaming event.

In 2018, Starlight Children’s Foundation ran its first-ever charity streaming campaign, raising over $90,000 in a single week. The charity partnered with EB Games and 20+ top AU gaming influencers. While this strategy involves more in terms of logistics, it shows the gaming community you’re committed to this new avenue, building trust and loyalty while raising the funds you need.

We hope that these charity gaming ideas might give you a sense of how gaming can impact your organisation and how to get started in your first charity gaming event even if you don't have the resources for a big investment.
